The scale of spatial and temporal variability of soil moisture reserves was examined in the very heterogeneous landscapes of the central forest-steppe zone of the Russian plain. Three main scales of variability were determined in connection with intra-geosystem, inter-geosystem and regional (basin) differences in soil and vegetation cover and the groundwater. The spatial-temporal variability of the soil moisture revealed in elementary geosystem during a full annual period in 1988 and a partial annual period in 1991. Intra-annual year dynamic features of the soil moisture reserves were observed for representative elementary geosystem types. Intraseasonal changes in soil moisture at different agricultural meteorological stations (agrometeostations) were found to be highly correlated during years of normal and high precipitation.
