The sudden squabble between i2 Technologies, Inc., and TIBCO Software, Inc., last week stunned the competitive and scrappy supply chain management (SCM) industry. webMethods, Inc., a rival software firm that is a "preferred provider" of i2's SCM software, challenged the wording of a TIBCO announcement in which TIBCO called itself a "preferred" partner. i2 seemed to agree, acknowledging also that its TIBCO deal was merely the latest renewal of a SCM software alliance that has been in place for nearly four years. Moreover, TIBCO is merely a "recommended" reseller, according to the contract. Such is the touchy and tentative state of affairs within the oft-touted but still tenuous world of supply chain management.
