Offshore foundations (commonly also referred to as substructures) for supporting topside structures are commonplace in the oil and gas industry for supporting, for example, a platform. The use of offshore foundations is commonplace too in other fields, such as for supporting wind turbines in offshore wind farms. One such type of foundation, as shown in Figure 1, is a monotower type foundation 1, also commonly referred to as a monotower substructure 1. The monotower substructure 1 will comprise a tube or column 2 supported by, as shown in Figure 1, a lower framework 3 or, as not shown, a jacket. Jackets are typically used where the sea depth is greater and/or where the structure to be supported by the monotower substructure is larger. As shown in Figure 1, the framework 3 comprises four legs; though frameworks with differing numbers of (e.g. three) legs are also commonly employed. For particularly shallow sea depths and/or where the topside structure is particularly small (e.g. a wind turbine), no jacket or lower framework may be provided at all. Instead, the tube or column may be piled into the seabed to act as a 'monopile' support to the topside structure.
