For more than 50 years there has been an intensive enquiry to define the wellsprings of competitive success and a variety of explanations have been offered. For some, the quality of organisational leadership is key; influential voices have argued that superiority in product/market strategies is 'ingredient X' whilst others assert that competitive success lies in the ability to exploit specialised assets in fast, shrewd and integrated ways (this approach has become known as the "resource theory of the firm").rnThe authors of 'Knowledge creation processes: Theory and Empirical Evidence From Knowledge-Intensive Firms' are wedded to the "resource-based view" and argue that one resource in particular - learning - is responsible for superior competitive performance. They consider that, "business management is a perfect synonym for knowledge management" (11) and that, "a successful firm is one that is able to manage its learning process effectively" (44). Moreover, "two kinds of actions can be employed by the firm in order to obtain competitive advantage... the first of these activities is linked to the creation and acquisition of new knowledge, while the second is closely related to the use, incorporation and dissemination of already available knowledge" (44-5).
