The four papers in this Section employ a new and comprehensive database on European patents and inventors (PatVal-EU) based on a large-scale survey of inventors that involved six research teams for more than 2 years in France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK. The first paper presents the plain survey data and the survey methodology. The basic data are by themselves new, interesting and not available from existing sources. The other three papers exploit the richness of the data set to develop specific applications on: (ⅰ) the productivity of industrial inventors; (ⅱ) the inventors' incentives to patent, with particular reference to the German compensation scheme; (ⅲ) the determinants of patent licensing.
