These three books are accessible, readable and well informed, written in a style which will have wide appeal to new researchers, especially to those at undergraduate level. Of the three, the book Observation techniques - structured to unstructured is particularly easy to read and has some excellent anecdotes and real-life scenarios to make the subject both appealing and easy to remember. The style of the book seems a little odd in places, as it jumps from a format which is clearly instructional to some very long descriptions of the writer's own observational research which can begin to read as if it is a paper outlining his work, rather than a handbook for supporting those who need help in understanding the topic. In a similar way, different parts of the book are written in quite different styles; some sections are very practical and, although they explore established theory, make little or no reference to it - for example the section about 'signifier' and 'signified' with no reference to Barthes. In other places, the book is heavily referenced and interested students can find wider reading very easily. Despite these criticisms the book is both useful and well written; the explanation of logograms by likening them to a maths equation confronting a Frenchman and a Norwegian is, in itself, a reason to buy it.
