On a Friday morning last month, we received some negative news on the plastics recycling front. In a one-paragraph press release sent Aug. 11, QRS Recycling and Canusa Hershman Recycling stated they were idling their joint-venture facility outside of Baltimore. The partners noted they had hopes to upgrade the operation or find a buyer to take over the enterprise. But the essence of the situation was clear: The plant simply wasn't cutting it from a profitability standpoint.
