A slow-motion car crash - that's what the current situation with MRF contracts feels like. Everyone sees the wreck unfolding, but not everyone can agree about what should be done. In the heady days of 2011, not many anticipated the crash. Industry leaders knew that commodities pricing would eventually go down - this is a cyclical business - but not many saw the recent extended downturn across all material types. Some might say contracts should protect stakeholders from volatile commodities pricing. The length of a contract is supposed to act as a buffer and extend across enough time that trie market risks and rewards are shared between both processors and their customers, the municipalities.
