Foreign and domestic steel producers have been forced to boost ferrous scrap prices due to a paucity of recovered metal in North American scrap yards. Prices rose by more than $100 per ton this spring as mills scrambled to acquire sufficient volumes for melting. However, the supply pinch has led to an even greater price jump in selected markets, such as the central Midwest, where a large mill or two came very close to running out of recovered metal. Market observers suggest, however, that higher scale prices will lure peddlers and other suppliers to deliver more scrap to processing yards, thus alleviating the current scrap shortage.
