摘要

Summer is approaching as I write this editorial, which means baseball is in the air. And I, dear readers, am a baseball fan. While I root for the Oakland As, ultimately I am more a fan of the game itself. And as a fan of the game, I am always looking to learn more about it, which has led me down the path of modern statistics. No longer will metrics like batting average and RBIs suffice. Like many fans, I am now interested in categories like WAR, BABIP, xFIP, wOBA- the whole can of alphabet soup. In today's baseball, statistics are deeply embedded into the culture of the game, but they are often just as deeply misunderstood - to the point that there is an ongoing culture war among some baseball veterans and fans about what should be counted and why.
