摘要

Mattresses have long stood out as a quintessential "hard-to-recycle" product. They are bulky, contain a range of different materials that can be challenging to separate and are not part of any established collection infrastructure in most communities. But mattresses - and their box-spring companions - are clearly a mainstay of society, and there's no indication that their composition is becoming any easier to deconstruct. And though a single mattress is typically used by consumer for years on end, great quantities still head into the waste stream. According to the Product Stewardship Institute, more than 50,000 mattresses are discarded in the U.S. each day.
