Weaker-than-expected offshore demand helped push scrap prices down in late July. The August market held at this level, with prices moving up and down by small amounts. Market sentiment, however, points to a potential slight improvement this fall, even with scrap exports being off by more than 20 percent this year. Aluminum prices rose this summer to 17-month high on improved market fundamentals. For copper, much of the talk centers on China, where scrap copper imports by Chinese buyers are down 15 percent this year. Goldman Sachs and other analysts predict the copper market will be negatively affected by a metal surplus of as much as 500,000 tons, thus pushing prices down over the next year.
