Pet bottle recycling may be the plastics industry's most successful sustainability story, and this story speaks to recycling specialists of all kinds. Although the PET bottle recycling rate in the U.S. has hovered between 20 and 30 percent over the last decade or two, the rate in Europe has approached respectability, at over 50 percent. By contrast, the recycling rate for all other plastics in the U.S. lies somewhere below 10 percent, and although the recycling of high-density polyethylene containers occurs at similar rates as with PET, most HDPE products are only beginning to be reclaimed in large amounts. Moreover, it could be argued that the familiar crystal-clear PET bottle stands out as a strong visual symbol that helps transmit a message about the potential of- and the need for - plastics recycling: It's hard to imagine schoolchildren in most areas of the world not now knowing that these bottles are recyclable.
