The scrap market in the first weeks of the year was extremely heated, with prices for some grades rising sharply. Several analysts say that a number of key domestic mills made a mistake at the end of 2010 when they reduced their scrap inventories in order to improve their financial picture. When steel demand rose quickly in January, these mills were forced to offer higher and higher scrap prices in order to keep their furnaces fed. Lousy weather in many parts of the country led to reduced scrap receipts by mills, thus putting added pressure on the market.
