While much public attention has recently focused on the debatable risks of cell phone radiation, the danger posed by end-of-life electronics is far more conclusive. A new study published in an academic journal shows improper handling of electronic scrap can cause cardiovascular disease, DNA damage and possibly cancer in workers who dismantle it and those nearby. The study, published in Environmental Research Letters, was conducted by Chinese academic researchers who took air samples from Taizhou, a dismantling complex in Zhejiang province where 60,000 people are involved in breaking down more than 2 million tons of e-waste annually, and examined the effects of air-borne pollutants on cells in human lungs.
