Beginning Oct. 1, many large businesses in Connecticut will be required to compost their organics waste, just as soon the state gets two composting facilities up and operating. Earlier this year, Connecticut lawmakers passed legislation requiring all commercial food wholesalers and distributors, industrial food manufacturers and resource and conservation centers that generate 104 tons of organic waste each year to compost it. Although the main provisions of the bill won't go into effect until Connecticut has two organic waste processing facilities, the legislation was passed to signal to the composting industry that the state is open for business.
