Although ferrous scrap prices dipped slightly as fall began, market leaders suggest conditions point for a modest price rebound. Scrap inventories at processing yards and steel mills are at a low level, and with cooler weather on the horizon, scrap receipts at yards are not expected to move upward. At the same time, domestic and foreign demand for scrap metal remains strong. During its 2011 fiscal year, Schnitzer Steel continued to tighten its grip on the metals market by spending $41 million to acquire 10 companies located in places ranging from Maui, Hawaii to Attleboro Massachusetts, according to the company's recent Securities Exchange Commission filings.
