The American Chemistry Council is highlighting results of a new study from Columbia University's Earth Engineering Center which suggests the energy potential of unrecycled plastics could be enough to power 6 million cars or 5.2 million American homes. If converted to oil and/or refined into usable fuel, the study suggests that plastics that are otherwise landfilled in the U.S. could produce up to 52 million MWh of electricity. The ACC-backed study stressed that recycling plastics is still a better option in most cases, and said its findings are only intended to be applied to difficult-to-recycle plastics or problem materials.
