摘要

Stakeholders in the Pacific Northwest tackle the challenges affecting commingled recycling systems, in order to help programs get the most out of curbside mix. Fully commingled recycling systems, a.k.a. single-stream, involve the mixing of recyclable materials for the purpose of efficient collection. Depending on the municipal recycling program, commingled collection systems may recognize a wide range, or just a handful, of commodities, the level of acceptance typically dependent on what can be processed by the program's designated materials recovery facility (MRF). And, though a MRF is tasked with sorting all the recyclables back into high-quality feedstock streams - with limited contamination by outthrows and prohibitive items -collecting recyclable materials does not always mean the material is being recycled. In fact, numerous commingled systems across the country are collecting, then sending, recyclables on a long trip to the landfill by not sorting them effectively.
