As domestic and export demand for recovered paper reached an all time high in 2006, paper recovery reached new heights with a record 53.4 percent of the paper consumed in the U.S. (53.5 million tons) being recovered for recycling last year. The 53.5 million tons represent an increase in paper recovery of 83.7 percent since 1990, when the paper industry undertook its first serious commitment to advance recycling in the U.S. This means that Americans currently recover nearly 360 pounds of paper for every person in the country, up from 233 pounds per person in 1990.
