Rising oil prices have generated enhanced interest in new energy producing or energy saving technologies. In the waste management field, new research initiatives have been launched to see if fuels can be cost-effectively produced from select waste streams, such as converting plastics to oil or using biomass to produce recoverable gasses. In addition, the potential to process scrap tires to produce oil and gas is receiving increased research focus. A recent California assessment performed by the University of California Riverside looked at a number of tires-to-fuel opportunities.
