Recycling programs face added challenges whn dealing with yesterday's obsolete electronics. But a recent review of e-scrap recycling collection programs has them on the right track to deal with these rising volumes. Agenuine concern for the proper management of electronics waste has emerged among the residential- and small-business sectors. But with evidence indicating a steadily growing volume of material, programs to address this issue are on the rise as well. Currently communities in 38 states make some form of e-scrap recycling program available to residents. Although a few of these programs have been prompted by legislation, most programs have been initiated on the local, regional or state level without legislation as their impetus. A recent review of e-scrap recycling in nine states and a survey undertaken by Moore Recycling Associates (Bethel, Maine) of approximately 85 individual communities resulted in the identification of some impressive programs and some definite trends in collection activities.
