While most of recycling's political wins and losses occur at the local and state levels, the federal government occasionally does influence the field. For example, the Clinton administration has increased dramatically the amount of recycled products purchased by the federal government, encouraging manufacturers to make these products more widely available. The Jobs Through Recycling Initiative of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Washington) has distributed $8 million in grants to state and tribal agencies for recycling market development programs. So, what can the recycling industry expect from a George W. Bush or Al Gore administration? We look at several factors to give insight.
