Consumers in the UK spent f2,684 mn on products for their gardens in 1997. This amounted to 0.5 per cent of total consumer expenditure. There was a strong recovery from recession, followed by further growth in the late 1990s, partly inspired by windfall payments, but weather conditions at key weekends of the year (especially late Spring) can have a strong effect on annual sales. The majority of keen gardeners are mature (usually retired) and relatively affluent And this stabilises the market to some extent but leisure spending by younger Householders tends to vary more.
