The jeans market has been in decline, particularly since 1995. The worst year was 1997, when volume sales fell by 7 per cent to 47 mn pairs and value by 4 per cent to f1,075 mn. This is due to the popularity of other types of casual trousers and sports clothing (and leggings in the case of women), plus the rise in sales of lower- priced retailer brand jeans. Men's and women's jeans each have a volume market share just exceeding 40 per Cent and children's jeans account for remaining 17 per cent. However, in Value terms men's jeans account for nearly 50 per cent of sales, women's for just Over 40 per cent and children's for under 10 per cent.
