Response lag during rapid steering in the hydraulic power steering system of a vehicle was analyzed with a numerical simulation mathematical model which considered the propagation of pressure waves in a hydraulic line and visco-elastic characteristics of the hose. Pressure perturbation by pump flow ripple and self-excited vibration which were incompatible with the response, were analyzed by the simulation. From these examinations, the mechanism of the response lag is clarified and the optimized dimensions of the flow control value and the supply line which reduce the response lag, the pressure perturbation and the vibration were found.
