We have measured a new upper limit to the Fano factor of mercuric iodide of 0.19±0.03. This new limit was achieved by slightly cooling the mercuric iodide x‐ray detector and preamplifier to -20 °C so that the contribution to the full width at half‐maximum due to charge collection efficiency was minimized. The new upper limit is part of a gradual trend toward a lower Fano factor as growing and fabrication techniques for mercuric iodide improve.
