Using a demountable x‐ray tube it is shown that elimination of the window between its target and a ``fluorescing'' sample increases the intensity of the characteristic x rays excited in a light element by as much as 100‐fold without loss of stability in the tube operation. The nature of this effect is discussed and its potential value for the x‐ray spectroscopy of light elements illustrated.
