In "Conundrums with Uncertainty Factors," Cooke has delved into the probabilistic interpretation of uncertainty factors (UFs) and found some significant problems with the conception (or at least with the current conception) of this issue. Over the history of development of what we might call the "UF paradigm," we have made a series of assumptions, definitions, and conceptualizations about contributors to uncertain projections of safe human exposure from animal testing results. These have structured how we conceive of and describe uncertainty in the projection of acceptable intakes. The essence of what Cooke has shown is that all of these suppositions cannot simultaneously be true.
