摘要

My eighth grade teacher wrote on the blackboard for the edification of his students: "The school of experience is the best school. But it is a school for fools."rnMust we be fools, and learn only from what we have personally experienced? Can we learn from deep history, and our improving understanding of how things work, that we face catastrophes far beyond our experience?rnSuppose that about 65 million years ago, a species, evolved from dinosaurs in similar fashion to the way we have evolved from mammalian primates, had developed to a level of social and technological achievement similar to that of the human race at present. Would this species have been able to foresee and avoid the extinction event from the impact of the asteroid off the Yucatan Peninsula, which ended the era of the dinosaurs?
