Paragraph 105 of the Highway Code (2003 revision) provides:rn"Stopping distance. Drive at a speed that would allow you to stop well within the distance you can see to be clear. . .rnTypical stopping distances 20mph = 12 metres or three car lengths . . ."rnThe claimant's and defendant's vehicles were travelling towards each other along a narrow single track lane on a damp morning. As he approached the brow of a hill the claimant saw the defendant's vehicle ahead and slowed to a stop, pulling over to his nearside. When the defendant saw the claimant she immediately applied her brakes but was unable to stop before colliding with the defendant's vehicle.
