The replacement of the existing Kosciuszko Bridge over Newtown Creek, between the boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn, N.Y., was awarded to Skanska Kiewit ECCO III JV for a $554 million design-build project. Phase 1 of the contract has been underway since May 23, 2014, and entails building a new eastbound structure and demolition of the existing bridge. JP Hogan Coring & Sawing Corp., based in Staten Island, was awarded the contract to remove the bridge deck, piers and pilings of the existing bridge as needed to facilitate the new bridge's construction on Nov. 24, 2014. JP Hogan's team has been using Husqvarna's FS 7000 D flat saw exclusively for all the road sawing, as it is the only Tier 4 emission-compliant flat saw approved by the federal government to meet DEP regulations without the need for additional after-market scrubbers. The saw enabled the team to remove pieces of the bridge deck efficiently and keep ahead of schedule.
