To aid in its bridge maintenance program, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) incorporated galvanized reinforcement and has done so now for decades. The Athens Bridge over the Chemung River on Rte. 22 in Athens, Pa., built in 1973, is one example. PennDOT used hot-dip galvanized (HDG) reinforcing bars in the bridge's construction. Though the bridge deck was in excellent condition, PennDOT wanted to replace the post and beam medial barrier with a more secure concrete Jersey barrier. The entire middle section of the deck was removed and the galvanized rebar was exposed for inspection. Tests found the chloride content in the concrete surrounding the rebar to be 5 lb per cu yd, far exceeding the chloride threshold for corrosion of black rebar.
