Until last year, driving on I-40 through Prairie County, Ark., was anything but a pleasure. The concrete pavement was badly faulted and presented a rough, uncomfortable ride for drivers. In late 2011, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) began accepting bids to renovate the pavement, which had reached the end of its useful service life. Some 50,000 vehicles travel this four-lane section of I-40 each day, which posed a large challenge for Koss Construction Co., which won the contract. More than 10 miles of 10-in. concrete needed major reconstruction in 215 working days, all while keeping traffic moving along the heavily traveled interstate.
