Edmunds County, S.D., highway superintendent Lenny Uhrich was facing a very troublesome section of County Hwy. 15 South. The 0.5-mile-long by 28-ft-wide aggregate surface roadway had become a very high-maintenance section. The section runs past a new ethanol plant. This ethanol-plant traffic resulted in 200-300 trucks per day, which caused a significant increase in maintenance. The roadway had to be bladed once per week, and the increase in dust facilitated the loss of gravel. In 2006 core samples were taken to determine the road's underlying structure. The samples revealed that an additional 6 in. of base material would need to be added to achieve the state specification of 14 in. to support legal loads.
