Motorists nationwide are driving on urban roads that are in increasingly bad shape, making travel less efficient and more costly in our most populated regions. Continued increases in travel by cars and trucks are putting significant wear-and-tear on these aging city roads. Maintaining these roads in good condition is crucial to mobility and economic growth in the U.S. Yet, overall road and bridge investment by all levels of government has decreased in the U.S. over the past two years. According to the recent TRIP report, "Bumpy Roads Ahead: Cities with the Roughest Rides and Strategies to Make our Roads Smoother," a quarter of urban streets and highways have rough pavements that provide a ride that most Americans find unacceptable. Conditions on major metropolitan roads in the U.S. — interstates, freeways and other principal arterial routes — have worsened in each year since 1998, when 22% were in poor condition.
