If the message hasn't got home to you now, then the chances are that it never will. Fuel costs have gone up, they will go up more, and they will stay up. A recession in the Western economies may bring some temporary respite, but the world demand for oil-based fuels is increasing faster than ever at a time when world production is already past its peak. Yes, there are alternative fuels available and more will become so, but production costs will undoubtedly be higher than they are for diesel now and supply will be slower and less secure. All of which throws the future viability of road transport operations into sharp focus. We are now in the bizarre situation where demand for our services has never been higher, but the profit margins on offer have never been lower. And, if that wasn't enough, customers are now beginning to apply criteria other than cost and reliability to their decision-making process when they are looking for a transport or logistics partner.
