For the last 20 years the National Audit Office's (NAO) annual Major Projects Report has highlighted the variable performance of the Ministry of Defence's highest value defence equipment procurement projects. It is no surprise, therefore, that I am often asked how MoD's performance compares with other public and private sector organisations delivering complex projects. There is no easy answer to this question. Even if the data is available, 'league tables' can be misleading, tell you little of context and provide no steer about lessons learned and how to deliver better outcomes in future.
