From the outset, it has to be conceded that there is nothing inherently wrong with the weapons currently found in the UK infantry platoon. The L-85 Individual Weapon (IW) and L-86 Light Support Weapon (LSW) are, in the A2 variant, arguably some of the most reliable and accurate infantry weapons currently in existence. However, while the addition of the L-110 Light Machine Gun (LMG) and L17A2 Under-barrel Grenade Launcher (UGL) have addressed some of both the actual and perceived shortfalls in capability, they have increased the weight carried by the infantry fire team. The A2 modifications have also increased the weight of the weapons.
