摘要

There are a number of issues that fall out from this article. Firstly, and the most obvious, commanders at all levels need to know what is going on around them. To achieve this they will need modern and highly capable sensors that can be launched from, and recovered to, maritime platforms; this is certainly the case in blue water and especially important in today's changing operational and asymmetric environments. Secondly, and implicit in the delivery of any surveillance capability to the front line, is the need to build up the requisite knowledge and skill base to operate the equipment from a ship. Coupled with this is the requirement to overcome the myriad of development and integration issues that will undoubtedly become more apparent as the procurement process develops. Thirdly, intelligent use must be made of the available network to ensure that information gets to where it is needed, when it is needed. Finally, it is important to underline the requirement for experimentation and the need for navies to continue evolving the technology being produced by industry in the best way possible.
