French naval operations during the Cold War generally had a maritime character: they revolved around the defence of our interests in the high seas by controlling the supply routes and the deployment zones for the oceanic strategic force; the defence of our littoral spaces against a clearly identified opponent; and the assertion of our military power alongside our traditional partners. This naval policy was deeply marked by our national interests and our specific position within NATO. It left room for co-operation with our western allies in peacetime and gave a clear priority to our presence in specific areas.
