Dealing with and protecting against Radio Controlled Improvised Explosive Devices (RCIEDs) forms an increasingly major part of the task faced by Ammunition Technical Officers (ATO) or bomb technicians. Their unique qualities of combining a calm, controlling authority with the ability to conduct an instant assessment of a given incident sets them apart as a rare breed of specialist. Even the most senior police and military commanders greet their arrival at the scene of an incident with a sigh of relief, as they assume the mantle of complete control until such time as a scene can be declared safe.
