Almost nine years after contract award to Westland Helicopters and four years after the declaration of the In-Service Date (ISD) of the WAH 64 Apache helicopter (AH) in December 2000, the employment of a front-line squadron of AH in a major Joint field-training exercise effectively demonstrated an Initial Operating Capability (IOC). Hard on the heels of a formal declaration by the MoD in September 2004, the 16 Air Assault Brigade Exercise EAGLE EYE in October 2004 - involving more than 50 units, almost 50 helicopters and over 50 fixed-wing aircraft across the length and breadth of England and Scotland -provided the vehicle to validate 656 Squadron AAC (8 x AH) as an effective and deployable operational attack sub-unit within 9 Regiment AAC. Following their various conversion and equipment courses, the second AH sub-unit of the Regiment, 664 Squadron, rejoined the unit at Dishforth in late 2004 to work-up to deliver a full operational unit by mid-2005, capable of a wide range of demanding tasks in the mid-to-lower end of the operational spectrum.
