As state-of-the-art advancements are made in the field of electronics for aviation, changes in methods of navigation, communication, air traffic control, and almost all aspects of flying procedures are brought about. One area basic to aviation safety that has remained almost untouched by this revolution, continuing without change since World War II, is the use of a checklist. If a pilot is conscientious (and aren't we all, at times), he picks up the checklist card or booklet at least twice during each flight and must undergo the same battery of challenges and responses religiously. Reading a written checklist with instructions on setting up the proper aircraft configuration for the mode of flight planned becomes quite tedious, and many fliers admittedly lay it aside for this reason. Others are too busy, or already know where everything should be. It's hard to blame them, as you know, if you've ever made an instrument approach to a crowded terminal area and tried to talk to a controller, fly the airplane, watch the engines and run through a checklist at the same time. True, a co-pilot and flight engineer ease the work load, but it can still pile up. Like that engine-out go-around on instruments where the landing gear was missed on the second approach because of a hurried-up procedure.
