Before performing an airborne mission that uses night vision goggles (NVGs), aircrew must properly set the NVG's various adjustments: inter-pupillary distance, tilt, eye relief, height, eyepiece and objective lens focus. Currently, aircrew use a Hoffman 20/20~(TM) test unit to pre-focus their NVG objective lenses at optical infinity before boarding their aircraft. They may also refocus their objective lenses while in the cockpit and during the course of the mission. The purpose of this paper is to present a methodology for studying how well an individual can focus the objective lens of the NVGs and compare the focus for objects at different distances. One important finding is that the infinity focus distance for these NVGs is at least 160 feet away. This means one should not use the standard 20 foot eye lane to accomplish objective lens focus prior to flight (fortunately, this is not a common practice but there has been anecdotal evidence that, on occasion, the 20 foot eye lane has been used for pre-flight focusing of the NVGs). Another finding is that the Hoffman 20/20~(TM) devices do not produce a statistically different focus position than true infinity.
