The Ergonomics Society, the professional body for ergonomics in the UK, celebrates 60 years in 2009. During this time, it has grown from a small group of 10 scientists, meeting in July 1949, to a thriving professional body with nearly 1500 members, including a significant number based abroad. It is also part of a growing international body, the International Ergonomics Association, which represents 46 ergonomics societies throughout the world. Initially, the society was called the Ergonomics Research Society, since the pioneers recognised that much research was needed to fill the significant gaps in our knowledge of how real people behave in normal environments. However, over the years, the balance changed and, in 1977, the name was changed to The Ergonomics Society.
