In our series of Seafarers' say, SAS reaches out to crew members from across the globe to gain insight into their thoughts, opinions, and experiences. Every month SAS will tackle a vital issue or question keyto maritime safety and give seafarers a much-needed platform to voice their point of view. For this issue, the predominant question seafarers answered was whether they would want their children to join the profession. Some comments have been edited for length and clarity. Safety should be the priority on every single vessel around the world. We know that companies are implementing more and more safety improvements as they are trying to avoid as many accidents as possible. I would like to focus on one of the most important pieces of safety equipment on board a vessel - the portable fire extinguishers. A simple tool known to everyone, it can save lives and it must always be ready for emergencies. Guidance for inspection of portable fire extinguishers can be found in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Resolution A.95K23) and IMO MSC.1/Circ. 1432.
