摘要

Approximately 90% of the world's trade is transported by the international shipping industry. Keeping crew and vessels safe is essential to our global economy and infrastructure. At present it is a challenge. Data show that crew fatalities are running at 90% higher than the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) targets. Additionally, the World Shipping Council has calculated an increase of 29% in containers lost at sea in the past three years. Protection from external threats also remains an industry-wide concern, largely owing to the ever-prominent issue of piracy that costs the industry roughly USD7 billion a year.
