摘要

Speech recognition has the potential to revolutionize the IT world, but human-machine communication is a distant prospect for most computer users. SAP INFO asked Gartner analyst Jackie Fenn whether the technology is finally about to make a breakthrough. It's the stuff of science fiction movies. People in fully computerized homes and offices, speaking commands out loud. "Wash the dishes. Lock the doors." And the building and appliances comply. Despite the efforts of researchers and software developers, that type of seamless, computerized speech recognition does not yet exist. Most of us still have to do the dishes ourselves. On the other hand, speech recognition technologies have made inroads into mainstream use. Telephony software, for instance, is in widespread use. Think of calling an airline company and navigating through a voice-prompt system to make a reservation. Researcher Gartner says that by 2007 licenses for such software will generate revenue of $259 million.
