Of the three great Soviet design bureaus that provided fighter aircraft for the Great Patriotic War perhaps the greatest, OKB-301, founded in 1937 and subsequently named for Semyon Lavochkin, remains the most unsung, overshadowed by the subsequent post-war proliferation of designs by MiG and Yak, but it was the pugnacious La-5 that first provided the Soviets with an aircraft to match the Luftwaffe's Bf 109 and Fw 190 when it began to appear in increasing numbers in 1943.
